On the Chinese calendar, 2012 is the year of the dragon. This piece was started on the first new moon this year, January23, and completed at the conclusion of the festival on the full moon February 7th. The 6 ½” dragon is cut out of a large ivory hollow following its natural curve and is suspended in front of a mammoth bone backdrop. (May be a dragon bone… and together they may hold lots of good fortune…. If you believe it that sort of thing!)
